Regional and municipal politicians from the CIVITAS DESTINATIONS regions and cities sign a Political Statement in Elba

Funchal (Portugal), Valletta (Malta), Rethymno (Greece), Limassol (Cyprus), Las Palmas de Gran Canaria (Spain) and Portoferraio & Rio (Italy), CIVITAS DESTINATIONS partners work on solutions aiming at improving sustainable urban mobility in touristic cities and regions.

On the 9thof April 2019, the project organised a Political event in Elba where Regional and municipal politicians from the CIVITAS DESTINATIONS regions and cities have signed a Political Statement.

The Political Statement, also supported by the island members of the CPMR Islands Commission, was signed by Patricia Dantas, Regional Director of Economy of the Vice Presidency of the Autonomous Region of Madeira; Nikos Sykas, Deputy Mayor of Limassol; Tassos Papadourakis, Chair of the Rethymno Municipal Council; Claudio de Santi, Deputy Mayor of Portoferraio, Elba and
Cinzia Battaglia, Vice Mayor of Rio, Elba.

The statement shows the strong political will of DESTINATIONS cities to contribute to the sustainable development goals and to implement a long-term vision for their cities based on the following 6 main goals:

- To achieve an enhanced quality of life in their cities

- To foster local & regional economic growth

- To enhance the capacity to manage and govern

- To improve coordination between the needs of the

individuals and the responsibilities of the city

- To enhance local & regional competitiveness

- To become political frontrunners
