Las Palmas de Gran Canaria decided to set up a Mobility Office (SUMP Observatory) with a twofold objective: to be in charge of coordinating, monitoring and evaluating the 2012 SUMP in place and to coordinate the update of the SUMP during the lifetime of the CIVITAS DESTINATIONS project and beyond.

The CIVITAS DESTINATIONS project provided the opportunity to the local partnership in Las Palmas de Gran Canaria (Municipality of Las Palmas de Gran Canaria, Guaguas Municipales, Sagulpa and CINESI) to assess and analyse tourists’ mobility behaviour. The evaluation approach was based on-street surveys to tourists and on mobile phone data tracking.

The main goal of this measure was to create a Laboratory Area for sustainable urban mobility around the Puerto Ciudad area (close to the new Aquarium and the Cruise Terminal), where plenty of touristic and leisure attractions are located.

In the framework of DESTINATIONS the city launched and operated a new digital-based bike sharing system named Sítycleta. The Sítycleta is a station-based bike sharing (SBBS) system that includes 40 new bike stations, 375 smart bikes with a solar-powered on-board computer, 20 e-bikes, and 2 adapted bikes for physically impaired people.

With the support of the DESTINATIONS project, it was possible to co-fund 6 new Electric Vehicle (EV) charging points to boost the visibility of public recharging, encouraging existing drivers of cars to switch to electric alternatives. The project also supported the transition to public electrified fleets by co-funding 3 electric vans that replaced the previous diesel van fleet.

The D4Service solution was the initial step to overcome the freight distribution problems in Funchal, by providing a smart distribution system to small local businesses in order to make urban delivery processes more efficient. A mobile App organises delivery routes automatically and allows real-time communication with customers.

The vision of the SULP of Las Palmas de Gran Canaria was to facilitate the safe, reliable and efficient movement of freight into, out of, and within the city, supporting a competitive local and regional economy, whilst taking into account the needs of other transport users, the environment and residents' quality of life, as well as future needs of our society and the environment.

The goal of measure LPA 6.1 was to develop and implement a Green Credit Scheme, to encourage citizens to adopt more sustainable lifestyle patterns by providing tangible economic rewards. The Green Credit Scheme, named Club GuaWay, was launched in October 2020 and 3 months after the launch the initiative had almost 500 affiliated members.

The main aim of this measure was to carry out a communication campaign in order to raise awareness of the importance and scope of the new BRT project. It is important that the system brings economic and environmental benefits as well as contributes to an eco-friendly city where pedestrians are the main beneficiaries.

Thanks to CIVITAS DESTINATIONS funding, Guaguas Municipales purchased three hybrid buses and one fully electric bus. The three hybrid buses substituted 3 diesel buses and have been in operation since August 2018, and the single electric articulated bus – the first in the Canary Islands – has been in operation since September 2019.

Before DESTINATIONS, Las Palmas de Gran Canaria counted 818 bus stops located throughout the city, however, only 81 of these offered real-time information. Guaguas Municipales extended the real-time information system to a further 20 bus stops, which were equipped with screens powered by solar energy.

The objective of this measure was twofold: to increase the number of tourists travelling on public transport (PT) and to update the ticketing system of the public transport system.
